Following the Five Things Meme, five things you may not know about me.
- I am a mixed-hander, right footed with a dominant left eye and generally cack-handed. (Like anything I undertake it is a case of swings and roundabouts. Whilst writing this I managed to pour beer into my slipper having missed my mouth. I tossed Kento’s hat across the room like 007 and it landed squarely on his head).
- My interest in Japan began at an early age whilst practising karate. Sadly I stopped training after nine years.
- I met my wife in New Zealand whilst there for a year. She had just arrived and was posted to the same shared dormitory. I’ll stop short of the cliché.
- After many years, I am still unsure of career to follow. Perhaps it is because to me it seems unnatural to focus on a specific area. That aside, above all, I’ll settle for being a Dad.
- I have an aversion to these sorts of questionnaires (but flattered for the tag).
Apologies to the following…

I’ve been living in Japan for a year, it is also six months since Kento arrived. What is notable is how quickly the time has passed. Although we haven’t had an income since I left England, it has been a boon to be able to spend the time together (and also in the garden).

Most of yesterday was spent digging and sowing red clover as I hoped to travel to Kyoto today.

Red Clover
Late February I distributed seeds around the freshly dug beds, about 5g per square metre.
Sunflowers
I grew 24 over the summer, most of which were left until they began to litter the ground with seeds. The stems seemed too fibrous and woody to go into the compost bin. I did manage to render the pulp from the insides.

Yesterday I went on a package tour to Kōchi on the island of Shikoku. We made good time and as we crossed the Grand Seto Bridge the gloomy skies began to subside. Although I was unable get any reasonable shots from within the bus, the views were striking. The series of bridges span the Seto Inland Sea which is home to around three thousand islands.
Once we arrived, our group descended upon a local ryokan for lunch (held at eleven as we over an hour early). We then had our ‘free time’ to explore the castle. The ume (asian plum) had just begun to flower.

Back on the bus we travelled the short distance to Katsura Beach, a quintessential Japanese scene.
