Weeds turned up, clover turned in.

Weeds turned up, clover turned in.

Every few days the weather seems to go from one extreme to the other. At the beginning of the week the first tips of asparagus had pushed through. Along with the garlic and onions, I had wanted to have got the beds weeded beforehand. At least clover was turned in. This may be back with vengeance and add to the list of things to keep an eye on. Once the weather settles, Kento can get out there and plant some potatoes.

Presently, the yellow dust clouds that blow over from the Gobi Desert are visible and making headlines. Despite blue skies and temperatures in the low twenties, Mount Daisen has been totally obscured. Here the unwelcome phenomenon is called kōsa (黄砂). Cars and windows soon become filthy. It has got to be what comes with it and for why that is of most concern.

Wheat malt, fine barley malt and select hops create this “smooth as silk” flavor.

Brewer Sapporo

This is the latest in the Yebisu range and much better than the last “The Hop”. Interested in the addition of wheat – not sure if it is really malted. A good one, if expensive.

Baby brussel sprouts

Baby brussel sprouts

The last of the winter veg to come out were the brussel sprouts. Although there hasn’t been any craving for sprouts (めキャベツ), I wanted to grow some as they are uncommon in Japan. There isn’t any disappointment with what turned out to be far from a bumper harvest. The preparation, including the cutting of tiny crosses in the bases, took only slightly longer than their three minute cooking. They made a different accompaniment to rice and miso soup and gave no unpleasant side effects.

Kento (two years) & Maya (two weeks)

Kento (two years) & Maya (two weeks)

Maya is now six weeks old. Having made a trip to the clinic two weeks ago, it was the turn of a health visitor from the City Office to visit us. Between the two visits, Maya has gone from a gain of 50% of her original weight to almost double. Her neck is much stronger, she doesn’t need head support aside for clumsy manoeuvres. Even the fair pair of eyebrows seem to have been suddenly pencilled in. It is just so surprising how quickly they change.
