Sweet corn

Sweet corn

A corny title but there’s plenty to be said about just picked sweet corn. Even so, I’m not quite decided on what or rather how to express what is so pleasing about it. It is certainly very satisfying just to twist off a couple of cobs. Akin to asparagus, unlike anything you’ll ever buy from the supermarket it barely needs cooking if at all. Not being an American? Robinson Crusoe?
Anyway, no crows this year.

Half price herbs

It’s way past the recommended sowing date for the herbs I got cheap recently. However, I had to open some of the packets. The four that got tested, germinated two days after being sown, rather than the noted two to three weeks. Unfortunately, with exception to the borage, the shoots haven’t come on any further. Perhaps it’s just the current dullness and they will spring into action once there’s some sun.

29th Kaike Triathlon

The morning looked reasonable for this year’s triathlon. There were no sightings of sharks or incoming typhoons. It wasn’t particularly humid or hot. It was cloudy. By the afternoon things had turned wet, very wet. It was hammering down, in stark contrast to last year. There were even warnings about the Hino River bursting its banks.

Taro Aso election

Beleaguered PM Taro Aso has at last set a date for the general election. However, not much earlier than the mandatory date. The news follows his party’s crushing defeat in Tokyo’s municipal election yesterday. Having survived several attempts to oust him, I suppose that if his party wins, he gets to keep his job.
Also brewing in the news is talk of the possibly of drink giants Kirin and Suntory merging. If it were to be realised, the resulting company’s revenues would exceed that of Anheuser-Busch InBev and Coca-Cola. Beer consumers in Japan are already faced with just four choices.

Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER

Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER

We took advantage of an offer from Asiana Airlines (Airline of the Year) for our recent trip. A few things could have been better and a few beyond any carrier’s remit. The queue for the toilet found the baby a convenient distraction throughout the whole flight. The bassinet was not held flush against the wall. Rather than it be at right angles, it had a good 30° slant and was of no use as it was. The layout of the plane meant my legs were in the aisle; the chicane between the toilets and the first row in economy class. Having had them trod on and run over with the trolley, I had the pleasure of the imbecile passengers who couldn’t manage to close the toilet door. Continue reading

Welcome to the Jungle

Upon our return, the view of the garden did bewilder. It was great to see how much things had come on in the short time we were away. Kabocha had climbed up the sweet corn and over the tomatoes, many of which were ripe. It’s warmer than it was in England and horribly humid. The coming weeks weeding is unlikely to be pleasant.

No rain, no mulch.

No rain, no mulch. There's still the bicycle somebody dumped.

English garden

It would have been nice to have spent more time in gardens; especially beer gardens, but alas our time in England is coming to an end. I was encouraged to see that the town’s allotments had expanded and not developed unlike the immediate surrounds. The other allotments went that way over a decade ago before the recent interest.
