It was 21°C yesterday. With all this rain and sunshine I expect the weeds will get off to a good start this year. The asparagus bed is already ahead of the pack; full of rogue grasses that are already hopelessly intertwined with their hosts. The wind has been strong too, the first spring wind (haruichiban) has passed.

Kento and pumpkin

Kento, pumpkin, three years ago.

There’s a tummy bug going around and both the children have been unwell. Maya has had her nappy changed more often. It’s been more of a 24 hour event for Kento. He’s been fine throughout the day, only to wake at half two in the morning to be sick in bed. This had continued for the past three nights. [yawn].

T-shirt winter

Apart from the odd flurry, there hasn’t really been any snow this winter. Quite at odds to other parts of the world, it again seems peculiar. I wonder if it will have any effect on the flavour of white leeks and daikon.

Maya

Maya

Maya is a year old. She has already been walking a couple of months. Doors are now no longer an obstacle and she has figured how to lift and open the stair guard. I’m going to have to remember to unlock it before I barge through it. Her appetite hasn’t abated, if anything she eats more than Kento. The little tears if her chawan (rice bowl) is empty. Looking back over past photos brings a familiar sense of déjà vu. Even Kento shared the same rotundness. :-|

Underpowered Yorkshire Puddings

Although parsnips at Christmas were a boon, getting light and fluffy Yorkshire Puddings proved impossible. Regardless of a foolproof recipe, they just would not rise. I’m sure the problem is the オーブンレンジ (oven range). It just isn’t a fair contender. The microwave/oven combo isn’t able to get back up to temperate quick enough once the door is opened. Bōnenkai

I survived my first bōnenkai (forget the year party). Instead of being with co-workers, it was amongst with a mixed bag of fellow gym-goers. Over the course of the evening, to compliment the food and drink, there were several games with prizes. Refreshingly, despite being the only foreigner, I didn’t feel like one (or rather, made to feel like one). I guess everyone there was out to enjoy themselves. It was certainly one the most fun and entertaining events I’ve been to.

Sore shoulder

My shoulder is hurting again. It could be the arrival of cold weather. More than likely, it is because I should give it a rest. Since my slight stretching mishap, it hasn’t felt good. Certainly has felt weak. The knock-on effect being chesty lopsidedness.
Anyway, mentioning the ache to the owner, he immediately started to squeeze my upper arm. I thought he was going to crush it. Yet, a repeat of the action the other side only hurt. He said the muscle was hard and called his wife. Continue reading
