Just as the mosquitoes had a productive time, I too can be pleased. Dodging the rain, I got the garlic out of the way. Increasing the width of the rows by a third to eight, the following was planted:

  • 2 rows of less pungent garlic from Kikkawa-san
  • 8 rows of six piece white
  • 2 rows containing four Aomori ‘bulbs’ and twelve Elephant
  • 8 rows of Shanghai garlic
  • 4 rows of garlic similar to the above from Mukai-san

The bulk of what went in was from the earlier harvest. All of the Aomori lifted had not split into cloves, which was a disappointment. Overall much better than the dozen heads I bought to increase the flock. The latest garlic was labelled as Shanghai from Nagasaki.

thanks for leaving a comment to my blog.

  • I shouldn’t be surprised over the variety of garlics, you can’t grow any vegetable without discovering that there are at least ten heirloom and five conventional sorts. For my own part I haven’t dared to try growing it ‘for real’ - I only use the garlic leaves from potted leftover cloves.

And on another note; you should be completely safe from vampires ;)

Thanks the two of you for dropping by.
I think since the Aomori garlic is from the north it may need a cold winter to spilt. That may also be a valid point to consider if you try growing some indoors.

Today is Sept 9 2008 - and I’m in Colorado. Would you happen to know if it’s too late to plant garlic? We will be selling our house in the Spring so it would need to be dug up by then. Thanks. Vikki at http://www.thorntonwilliamsfamily.blogspot.com

I’ve recently been told garlic needs nine months. Previous October plantings have been on the small size when pulled in early June (eight months).
I think if you are putting your house on the market in the Spring then it is worth it, otherwise it will probably be too early.
