Enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of first-time parenthood. Progress on the organic vegetable garden and other ramblings of a gaijin in Japan's least populous prefecture.

I have been to the hiroshima peace park and I have to say your photos brought back instant memories, its a very powerful place. One of my favorite things about it was the 1000 paper cranes exhibit, as well as the peace bell that you can go up and ring. If any one hasn't been there I would recommend going, but prepare to be sombered by the atrocious realities of war.

In war, what seems generally consistent is the places of politicians and civilians. You should visit the museum Mark. There's a lot there to take away. It was people like Marcel Junod who made a difference.

I wasn't even born when this happened yet I feel like I must apologise for our actions. I have heard the Pilot of anola gay killed himself and the crew suffered for life. I really am ashamed of the US for this , what an unbelievable thing. I feel the wrong people paid for crimes of others, they say that is war? Come on , war is BS in the 1st place fueled by ego and power brokers that will pay for this when we all meet our maker. This event in history has been swept under the rug by the US , never mentioned in High School or College , and I was a Political Science Major, other than we did it , it was the 1st a bomb like we should be proud of the great minds that focused on mass destruction ? Unreal.

So sorry to the people there, if i could do anything to make a difference I wish someone would contact me so my Daughter and I could volunteer. The sheer fact that the city looks amazing now doesnt take away the shame and pain they must feel.

I suppose that's why Nagasaki got little mention. I don't know the book but have read many stories. Towards the end of the museum there are rows of screens with a bench in front where you can watch survivor testimonies.

When I lived in Beppu-shi, I visited the Peace museum/park in Nagasaki on three different occasions. Each time was incredibly saddening and moving.

Have you ever read the book which has four eyewitness accounts of the bombing of Hiroshima? The accounts were published originally in a special edition of the New Yorker some time after the war. I don't remember the name of the book but the accounts are riveting.
