Enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of first-time parenthood. Progress on the organic vegetable garden and other ramblings of a gaijin in Japan’s least populous prefecture.

Just off route 180 in the town of Nichinan is a small set of waterfalls near an old ryokan. It’s just a short walk from the road. Inside the former hotel we watched a weaver at work on an old loom. Hanging on the walls were many traditional patchwork pieces. Coffee was served with a danshaku potato and miso wrapped in hoba. I’m hoping to go back a spend some time working on the farm.

Is that in the Hida province? We had miso cooked in hoba (was it for breakfast?) I then saw the leaves for sale in the market in Takayama and realised they were magnolia leaves.

Did you take photos of the weaving and patchwork? I’d love to visit - oh for a magic carpet!!!!
It’s splendid in Suffolk today - cloudless blue sky, not to hot, corn just turning to sandy gold, hollyhocks everywhere.

One day I’ll take another trip to Japan!

The town is in Tottori-ken a way over to the west. Seems hoba is the local speciality in Hida Province. I used a leaf to keep my backside dry at the waterfall prior. Wanted to take some photos of the weaver but didn’t want to disturb him. I did get a couple of the more contemporary pieces when I took a picture of the upstairs.

    Japanese patchwork

Everyone I called at the weekend was moaning about the weather in ’sunny’ Suffolk.

Thanks for posting the photo - I love all the muted indigo colours.

It’s completely clouded over now - just as I’mm about to start work in the garden!
