Six week baby check

Maya is now six weeks old. Having made a trip to the clinic two weeks ago, it was the turn of a health visitor from the City Office to visit us. Between the two visits, Maya has gone from a gain of 50% of her original weight to almost double. Her neck is much stronger, she doesn’t need head support aside for clumsy manoeuvres. Even the fair pair of eyebrows seem to have been suddenly pencilled in. It is just so surprising how quickly they change.
The girls are back

The girls stay in the clinic came yesterday to an end. Instead of staying, I made two or three visits each day. Over the standard stay of four nights, changes in them both are clear. Ritsue seems disappointed that she hadn’t lost much weight after the birth. The bump appears to have moved upwards and split in two. Maya’s nappy contents shifted from the bitumen-like meconium to mustard yellow (or yellow mustard). Every event had a touch of déjà vu. There was even a brief question over bilirubin levels. Last night was different. I had an excellent night’s sleep. Kento slept like a log and apparently Maya only woke three times.

It has been a long day. The ‘show’ started yesterday morning around 3:00. After a lot of stopping and starting, it wasn’t until just before 2:00 this morning, that Ritsue went in to labour. That stage only lasted ten minutes. She delivered a little baby girl we have named 茉耶 (Maya).
Despite not being much bigger than Kento, we were able to spend a couple of hours together after the clean-up. We spent most of the day together, with Kento making an appearance in the morning.

When we awoke this morning, I found I was an uncle and my wife an aunty. Miho had delivered her baby earlier. We both heard her leave for the clinic with her husband around ten. There was some question of when; the contractions at dinner time were quite irregular. Fortunately, for those involved it was very quick. In Japan the mothers tend to stay in the clinic at least a few days. All being well she will be back for Christmas.

It is customary in Japan for the expectant mother to return to stay with her parents; be separated from their husband. The idea is difficult for me to understand, especially at such an important point. My wife’s sister has been with us a few weeks now. Continue reading

In the third trimester 4D scans are offered. We were again lucky to be able to get a good glimpse.
During the consultation/check-up previous concerns about the baby’s position were put to rest.

I missed out going as I had to work. Ritsue took Kento and his runny nose along to the clinic. This gave the nurses an excuse to fuss over him. Four of them looked on as he lay next to his mother. Apparently the baby was waving a lot.

The doctor said he couldn't see anything to determine the sex
