Impromptu garlic harvest

Finishing the weeding I thought sod it. It is a bit early. A few lifted were of a decent size and there is the impending rainy season. In addition, not sure if rust has any effect on garlic in store as the little cluster of flecks had started to march.

Managed to collect above a hundred and twenty heads of the regular, three aomori and four elephant garlic heads. The stems of the latter are thicker than leeks. It didn’t take too long to give them a brush and bundle them up. Unfortunately, garlic scores pretty highly on the OH’s recent ‘taken a dislike to the smell/feel sick’ list.

Elephant garlic scapes

Elephant Garlic ScapesThe rain was very heavy last night and I wondered if it might be an early start of tsuyu (rain season), despite it only just finishing down in Okinawa. It should be a good few weeks off which I hope will be long enough for the overdue onions and garlic. The latter had sprouted a few fantastically gangly scapes, reaching over four feet in height. I think I’m going to have them for breakfast tomorrow.

Garlic golfball

The garlic along with the onions has been hanging around outside to cure. Yesterday the remaining garlic was checked, cleaned and boxed. There was a spell of exceptionally humid weather which got to a couple of cloves; it could be they were bruised. A few of the onions which were a little soft on the outside previously, have since dried out.

Of the four Aomori garlic heads harvested, this one front right, is quite small comparatively, about the size of a small onion and strangely spherical. Behind, a regular head, sans a mouldy clove and a tiny Kabocha pumpkin my wife was given.

Peeling back the paper, there is just the one clove, somewhat bigger than a golf ball. I guess it could of done with another month in the ground.

I noticed that I had pushed the minimal watering regime a little too far, the leaves of the sweet potatoes were drooping and some of those on the tomatoes plants were browning. A check into the soil confirmed this. Typhoon Usagi (rabbit) is predicted to pass tomorrow afternoon. It appears to be gaining momentum. Although the rain would be welcome, I expect the tomatoes and cucumbers will suffer the same early conclusion as last year.

Off Down The Lot

We are about to leave to go south to the Lot region. Yesterday remained cloudy, but it did warm up considerably. The cows wandered up the adjoining field to seek shelter under the trees.

Although there will be another short hiatus, I received an update from Miho this morning. The rainy season has reached the island of Kyushu, having travelled north from Okinawa. I imagine this to take another week or two to reach the plot. The main reason for the message was to mention that the garlic and the rest of the onions had harvested!

Message From Miho

I just downloaded another batch of photos from my helpful sister-in-law. The first was taken last Sunday. The clover around the tomatoes has since been thinned out and the red onions pulled.

Here some p-man, Japan’s popular pepper.

I am hesitant about giving the order to pull the garlic. As my minders are busy out working most hours, there is a good chance the odd week or two might pass and the heads end up splitting. I think this weekend it would be prudent to check several rather than the odd couple with a view to harvesting the lot?

There is quite a bit more yellowing to the leaves on a photo taken yesterday. It looks like most of the scapes got fried. Should be a little more blasé – I can always plant those past it?

Garlic

I decided to plant garlic in two rows across the width of the plot. Firstly, a row 45 cm wide was prepared.

Individual garlic cloves were then planted at a depth of 5 cm. These were spaced 15 cm apart, at intervals of 10 cm.

At present, 35 of the 36 cloves have sprouted and all four of the Aomori variety. These were planted at the end of Setember.

At the back of the shot standard head of garlic, against the Aomori that I had just dug up.

Garlic (ninniku) update

Written by: adekun on 18 October, 2006 9:23 am - Filed under: blogNo Comments »

The past week I’ve been watching the garlic sprout. So far about a quarter have pushed through. Having read up about planting them afterwards, I’m a little worried that I removed all of the outer layers. Probably doesn’t matter as long as they are not damaged. The Aomori garlic I moved is as yet to make an appearance.

It’s been pretty good to go back a recheck them after a couple of hours to find another has popped up.
