Frozen sweet corn

Sweet corn in the freezer

From upon my perch, I espied a good many crows circling the sweet corn. Perhaps unbeknown to them, worms burrowing away have already started to dine. Bustling in on the love triangle, beetles also threaten. I decided to grab the lot. Without shucking the ears, a few dozen were crammed into the freezer within twenty minutes.
I do wonder the best way of storing food; how to deal with those short-term gluts. How this frozen sweet corn will compare to that just picked?

Garden somewhat weeded

The rainy season reached Kagoshima on Friday. Rain reached here yesterday. Strangely, today is hot and cloudless. With work starting late in the day, there wasn’t reason to skimp the blossoming garden chores. June is especially punishing if the weeds are untamed. Firstly, the month grants ideal conditions for them to run rampant. Second, it is generally an unpleasant time to exert oneself outside; hot and humid with purposeful mosquitoes on the prowl. Veg garden in May

Planted summer veg

After an extra trip or two to buy a few more plants the summer veg planting is done. Even after a good look around, there doesn’t seem much to bridge the gap between mini and large tomatoes.
This year a few of the small アイコ (aiko) and 少桃 (lit. little peach) were planted, at the large end, the usual 桃太 (momotaro). I did come upon some grafted tomatoes with fruit around 60 g a piece. I hope they turn out to be a good investment… Continue reading

Sweet corn

Sweet corn

A corny title but there’s plenty to be said about just picked sweet corn. Even so, I’m not quite decided on what or rather how to express what is so pleasing about it. It is certainly very satisfying just to twist off a couple of cobs. Akin to asparagus, unlike anything you’ll ever buy from the supermarket it barely needs cooking if at all. Not being an American? Robinson Crusoe?
Anyway, no crows this year.

Upon our return, the view of the garden did bewilder. It was great to see how much things had come on in the short time we were away. Kabocha had climbed up the sweet corn and over the tomatoes, many of which were ripe. It’s warmer than it was in England and horribly humid. The coming weeks weeding is unlikely to be pleasant.

No rain, no mulch.

No rain, no mulch. There's still the bicycle somebody dumped.

Mulch me

Mulch me

A week ago the bulk of the summer veg were planted. The patch they now occupy isn’t the best. Only a year ago it was full of flowers, weeds, and camellia trees. It would really benefit from the ridiculously deep digging the initial beds got. In the back corner next to the potatoes, there are some sweetcorn mounds. Between the stakes: tomatoes, poorly aubergines, cucumbers and peppers. There’s still some pumpkin plants to plant; is it too late to sow a couple of seeds? The chilli pepper seedlings need to get transplanted along with whatever herbs come good.

Crows

I thought back in the spring there were quite a few more birds to be spotted in the garden. In addition to an increase in numbers, the range in sizes is up. There have been many pigeons hopping about and more recently crows. It hasn’t taken very long for a few of these diligent darker feathered pests to dismember all of the sweet corn. I was somewhat astonished to find stems and remnants of husked cobs scattered over the ground. Quite astute undertaking as I was just about to harvest them. :(
