Sweet corn

Sweet corn

A corny title but there’s plenty to be said about just picked sweet corn. Even so, I’m not quite decided on what or rather how to express what is so pleasing about it. It is certainly very satisfying just to twist off a couple of cobs. Akin to asparagus, unlike anything you’ll ever buy from the supermarket it barely needs cooking if at all. Not being an American? Robinson Crusoe?
Anyway, no crows this year.

Upon our return, the view of the garden did bewilder. It was great to see how much things had come on in the short time we were away. Kabocha had climbed up the sweet corn and over the tomatoes, many of which were ripe. It’s warmer than it was in England and horribly humid. The coming weeks weeding is unlikely to be pleasant.

No rain, no mulch.

No rain, no mulch. There's still the bicycle somebody dumped.

A week ago the bulk of the summer veg were planted. The patch they now occupy isn’t the best. Only a year ago it was full of flowers, weeds, and camellia trees. It would really benefit from the ridiculously deep digging the initial beds got. In the back corner next to the potatoes, there are some sweetcorn mounds. Between the stakes: tomatoes, poorly aubergines, cucumbers and peppers. There’s still some pumpkin plants to plant; is it too late to sow a couple of seeds? The chilli pepper seedlings need to get transplanted along with whatever herbs come good.

Crows

I thought back in the spring there were quite a few more birds to be spotted in the garden. In addition to an increase in numbers, the range in sizes is up. There have been many pigeons hopping about and more recently crows. It hasn’t taken very long for a few of these diligent darker feathered pests to dismember all of the sweet corn. I was somewhat astonished to find stems and remnants of husked cobs scattered over the ground. Quite astute undertaking as I was just about to harvest them. :(

We were spared the typhoon, although it was another gloomy and wet day. After dinner, I popped out to the garden to check the corn and ended up taking a few cobs. The test of a few raw kernels was promising, with a bit of luck they will be as sweet for tomorrow lunchtime.

Miho sent a few more photos of the plot, taken the past weekend. The rainy season is upon the region, which has eased my concerns about watering. Since it has been awhile, the first tomatoes to redden got picked. Next time, a few will get left behind to encourage the others to ripen.

Some giant Aomori garlic next to some of the larger regular stuff, most of which I hope to replant.

Sweetcorn rising up, the silks and ears are beginning to form.
