Desperately seeking sunblock

It might not be the case in the larger cities, but here it is impossible to find affordable sunscreen/sunblock. There seems to be only a few other alternatives: imported Hawaiian Tropic (SPF 0) at ¥1600 a bottle, or bottles (SPF 50) the size of a dental floss dispenser, about half the price. Probably need one bottle of the latter for the front and another for the back. Continue reading

Quadrupled charges

The children started nursery earlier in the year. As the charges are income based, we had a letter from the city office beforehand. It was a bit of a surprise months later, to get another letter to say the fees have been increased c. 400% and will be applied retrospectively. Continue reading

Underpowered Yorkshire Puddings

Although parsnips at Christmas were a boon, getting light and fluffy Yorkshire Puddings proved impossible. Regardless of a foolproof recipe, they just would not rise. I’m sure the problem is the オーブンレンジ (oven range). It just isn’t a fair contender. The microwave/oven combo isn’t able to get back up to temperate quick enough once the door is opened. Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER

Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200ER

We took advantage of an offer from Asiana Airlines (Airline of the Year) for our recent trip. A few things could have been better and a few beyond any carrier’s remit. The queue for the toilet found the baby a convenient distraction throughout the whole flight. The bassinet was not held flush against the wall. Rather than it be at right angles, it had a good 30° slant and was of no use as it was. The layout of the plane meant my legs were in the aisle; the chicane between the toilets and the first row in economy class. Having had them trod on and run over with the trolley, we had the pleasure of the imbecile passengers who couldn’t manage to close the toilet door. Continue reading

ASUS EAH4870 another dead fan

Three months have passed since I received my replacement graphics card. The fan on the first stopped spinning after a week causing the card to overheat. Despite an assurance from the manufacturer’s technical support, the same fate has befallen the successor. Reading similar stories elsewhere, there clearly is a problem with the particular model I have and I would hope a recall. Continue reading

The Delight Factory

I left the UK around the time the announcement to ban smoking in enclosed public spaces was made. Despite an expectation that Japan would have a differing stance, I was astonished to see the national volleyball team sporting the logo of a tobacco company. That has got to surpass McDonalds and Coca-Cola at the Olympics. Most developed countries have laws to prevent sports tobacco advertising. Why is Japan different? Well, the Ministry of Finance still retains a 50% stake in the diversifying corporation. Despite the poison dumplings Japan Tobacco is a model company.

At JT, we want to make society and people’s lifestyles more relaxed and more abundant. We want to go on creating unique delight that only JT can offer.

A great deal of money has been invested to offer the smoker clever behavioural pointers. It is called “Smokers Style” part of their Manners campaign. Whatever the underlying reason, I certainly welcome it. Here’s a few graphics off their website that make up the stickers, posters, adverts etc.

Copper tubing

Written by: adekun on 8 January, 2009 7:34 pm - Filed under: blog5 Comments »

In addition to feeling an independence curb, another big frustration out here is the inability to buy things I consider as ordinary. Although the city is five times larger than my home town, good bread, cheese and English books are nigh on impossible to source. An afternoon was wasted; cycling around to find that copper tubing is in the same category as baked beans and pies.
Although I was loath to do so, I’ve just ordered a short coil off eBay. I hope getting hold of materials for future science ventures will be easier.
